To be saved by Christ and join in His power and glory—as a Christian, do you really think your ways are worthy to be considered holy?
The Call to Follow His Footsteps
When Christ came, He called you to walk and live just like Him. Carry your cross to the very last breath. Is your life a reflection of this charge given unto you by your Master?
Grace and Responsibility
As much as none of us is worthy, this by no means lessens the responsibility Christ placed upon every single follower of His. Some may argue that grace makes them worthy. Oh yes, indeed it does. But shall you keep washing the pig that goes back to the very vomit it has been cleansed from?
Or what shall I say: does grace by any means give you a licence to sin wilfully?
Definitely not. And for this reason Jesus urged those who follow Him to carry the burden of following His footsteps.
Surrender, Not Self-Effort
This by no means means that you should fight to uphold your faith convictions by works, relying on your human strength. No. Total freedom from sin also calls for total surrender to Christ. Allow Him to do the good work He started and finished on the cross in your very life. Allow Christ to dwell in you, and let Him do the work Himself through the Holy Spirit working in you.
What Truly Makes You Worthy
This is what will make you worthy: submission to the will of God, not sacrifice in the name of holiness. It is the former that sanctifies and makes you special—letting God qualify you by submission to Him.
None of us is worthy to be saved, but by submission to Christ you draw near to the will of God. And in fulfilment of the will of God, you are indirectly fulfilling the law.
And if you are fulfilling the law, you become qualified to sit with Christ.
The Better Question
So instead of asking, “Are you worthy?” I will ask: Are your ways in accordance with the will of God for your life? Really?
