In all the numerous problems and vast needs of people, Jesus said you only need one thing to be a Christian. In fact, you need only one thing to do His work—whether outdoor preaching, performing miracles, praying, or anything else.
Many Christians tend to talk themselves down or convince themselves that they are not worthy of being used by Christ, or that they lack the character or resources needed to step out and minister. This self-inflicted belief is far from the truth. The moment you get saved, you are already capable of ministering to others. That is how powerful Christ is.
You do not need to first pray for extremely long hours or fast for a full year to become worthy of being used by God in some way. Let me show you what you really need in order to step out:
“And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.”
This was the first time Jesus ever sent out the apostles to preach. Notice the only thing He entrusted them with: the power of the Holy Spirit. Nothing more, nothing less.The most striking part is how He personally urged them not to take anything as they went out:
“And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.”
He told them to simply go as they were. Whatever was on the inside was enough to sustain them. This is what many miss—Christians who want to be used by God but think He first needs to provide them with resources or some secret formula before they can begin.
The Call Is for Every Believer
The call to serve God is on every Christian. It does not matter whether you got saved this morning or have been a Christian for the last 20 years. His grace is sufficient.
Do you remember the parable of the talents? The one who had been given one talent hid it in the ground, while the one who had been given more went and put them to use until they produced a profit. Whom do you think Christ was referring to in that context?
Yes—you, the Christian, are His servant. He has entrusted you not only with spiritual gifts but also with authority that is exercised through the Holy Spirit. How serious would it be on the day of judgment when you are asked what you did with what had been entrusted to you?
Will you say you had no time? Will you say the people seemed scary? Or will you say you did not have enough money to get started?
Start Where You Are
Being used by God does not begin with some grand launch; it is the other way around. You start by ministering to those around you—your family, friends, neighbours, and whoever else is near. This is where it all begins. Leave the growth journey to God.
When He sent out the apostles, He told them to go to the neighbouring towns and villages with no food and no money. Their preaching was to sustain them—and it did, along with the miracles they performed and the wonders that followed them. The influence they made was so great that we still talk about some of them, like Simon Peter, John, and the others, to this day.
And were they special? Not in any way. They were just ordinary fishermen and one tax collector. If God moved so powerfully through these men who had no wealth, how much more can He use you with everything you already have in your hands?
